The Lighthouse Clinic

This clinic was funded by The Rose project in 2006. Since it has opened it has placed 14,000 patients on AIDS treatment, of which 2,000 were HIV positive women. If a HIV positive woman is placed on anti-retroviral treatment at 26 weeks, the risk of transmitting the virus to her baby is almost eliminated (down to 2%). Mother to child transmission of HIV is the second most common form of transmission. It accounts for 30,000 infants being born with the virus each year in Malawi.
The Rose Project supports people affected by HIV or AIDS in Eastern & Southern Africa. It provides medical, nursing and pyscho-social care. It is named after Rose Atieno, a young Kenyan woman who was estimated to have been the 16 millionth person to die of AIDS.
